Alan Fletcher describes the Art of Looking Sideways

Describing himself as a 'visual jackdaw', master designer Alan Fletcher has spent a lifetime collecting images, ideas, quotations, anecdotes, jokes, memories, reflections and this is a compendium or "collage" of those things, exploring such themes as perception, colour, pattern, proportion, paradox, illusion, language, alphabets, words, letters, ideas, creativity, culture, style, aesthetics and value. This film also shows an interesting aspect of sequential design employed in the book, treating the whole book almost as a film with changes of pace.

His studio below shows a very ordered catalogue system of filed references and materials. He cut out and stored items for his collages (e.g. letterforms from cardboard boxes and packaging, and other ephemera) in translucent paper bags in vast glass cases.
